LASIK or Lasik is commonly called as Laser Eye Surgery or laser vision correction. This refractive surgery corrects astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. An ophthalmologist performs Lasik (that is, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) using the laser, or a microkeratome to improve vision by reshaping the eye’s cornea. Do you know why most of the patients like Lasik eye surgery? Yes, because it is the permanent alternative to contact lenses and eyeglasses. PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is another vision correction procedure which is similar to Lasik.
Here to state a point, the patients with myopia or thin corneas are not suitable for Lasik and PRK procedures. The Phakic intraocular lens is an alternative to them. Lasik eye surgery has become very popular across the world. It is an outpatient procedure, as it takes less than five minutes for the procedure. Lasik surgeon adjusts a laser for the patient’s particular prescription with the help of a computer. The patient is advised to see the target light for a short time, while the laser produces pulses of light to reshape the cornea in a painless way.
How’s it processed?
The planning and analysis of corneal reshaping techniques such as LASIK have been standardized by the American National Standards Institute, an approach based on the Alpins method of astigmatism analysis. The FDA website on LASIK states,
“Before undergoing a refractive procedure, you should carefully weigh the risks and benefits based on your own personal value system, and try to avoid being influenced by friends that have had the procedure or doctors encouraging you to do so”.
The procedure involves creating a thin flap on the eye, folding it to enable remodeling of the tissue beneath with a laser and repositioning the flap.
