Oculoplastic surgery or Ophthalmic plastic surgery is a highly specialized surgical sub-specialty of ophthalmology that involves reconstruction of the eyes orbit, tear ducts, eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead. The reconstructive procedures are performed by oculoplastic surgeons who are ophthalmologists who have completed an additional two years of training apart from their regular ophthalmology program. Most of the oculoplastic surgeries can be performed as daycare and do not require hospitalization.

The different types of surgical procedures performed by the oculoplastic surgeons include
Eyelid Or Blepharoplasty: This is the most common procedure that is carried out to correct the drooping eyelids. It involves the removal of excess skin and muscle from the eyelids, thus reviving the youthful appearance with also corrected vision.
Tear Duct Surgery: Also known as dacryocystorhinostomy is a procedure performed to address the blockage in the tear ducts. The natural flow of tears is returned by performing a bypass through the nose.
Eyebrow Lift: This procedure might often be combined with blepharoplasty that helps to lift eyebrows to their usual location that provides a more youthful appearance.
Ectropion Or Entropion: This surgery involves the correction of eyelids position that can lead to considerable discomfort.
Tumor Removal: Different kinds of tumors found in the eyelid and orbital area can be removed by the oculoplastic surgeons based on the diagnosis.
The first and foremost step is to schedule a consultation with an oculoplastic surgeon. The surgeon based on the condition to be treated, physical and vision examination will decide on the type of technique to be used. Before the surgery, patients are required to stop certain over the counter and anti-inflammatory medications that thin the blood. The patients are also suggested to stop smoking 3 weeks before the surgery. Most of the surgeries are daycare and performed under local anesthesia. It is crucial to have someone to drive the patient home after the surgery. The recovery period depends upon the type of surgery performed.
