Gonioscopy uses a special contact lens on the eye so the doctor can see the trabecular meshwork — the drain that lets fluid leave the eye. You cannot judge this drain with a normal torch exam. The finding decides whether you have open-angle glaucoma, a narrow angle at risk of closure, or pigment/pseudoexfoliation deposits. That choice changes drops, laser iridotomy, and surgery advice.

Will the lens scratch my eye?
A lubricating fluid sits between the lens and the cornea. Mild redness for a few hours can occur; scratches are uncommon.
Can OCT replace gonioscopy?
Anterior-segment OCT can hint at a narrow angle. Gonioscopy remains the clinical standard for seeing the drain itself.
Do I need dilation first?
Usually not. Dilation can close a narrow angle, so gonioscopy is often done before drops that widen the pupil.
