Service Overview

Vitreo-retinal surgery treats problems in the gel (vitreous) and the retina itself. Through tiny ports, the surgeon can remove cloudy gel, peel membranes, close a macular hole, or reattach a detached retina with gas, oil, or laser. It is specialised microsurgery — different from cataract or LASIK — and is planned after OCT, fundus exam, and sometimes FFA or ultrasound.

What It Covers

Pars plana vitrectomy

Removes vitreous gel to treat bleed, traction, or to access the retina.

Retinal detachment repair

Reattaches the retina with vitrectomy, buckle, laser, gas, or oil as needed.

Macular hole and ERM

Peels membranes and closes holes that distort central vision.

Diabetic traction and bleed

Clears haemorrhage and releases scar tissue pulling on the retina.

Who It Is For

Retinal detachment

A curtain, sudden flashes, or a shower of floaters that needs urgent repair.

Macular hole or puckering

Distorted central vision from a hole or epiretinal membrane.

Non-clearing vitreous bleed

Dense haemorrhage, often from diabetes, that does not settle on its own.

How It Works

1

Imaging and surgical plan

OCT, ultrasound, or FFA define the problem and whether gas or oil is likely.

2

Microsurgery

Through small ports the vitreous is removed and the retina is treated.

3

Positioning and review

If gas is used you may need face-down or specific head posture for days.

Why Choose Our VR Theatre

Vitreo-retinal surgery at Neera Eye Centre is led by retina specialists with on-site OCT, laser, and injection backup. Pre-op mapping and post-op reviews stay in the same team so detachment, diabetic, and macular cases are not split across hospitals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vitrectomy the same as cataract surgery?

No. Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy lens. Vitreo-retinal surgery works behind the lens on the gel and retina.

Will I need to stay in hospital?

Many cases are day-care or a short stay. Detachment repairs may need overnight observation and posture instructions.

Can I fly after gas is put in the eye?

Not until the gas bubble has gone. Cabin pressure can expand the bubble. We will tell you when flying is safe.

Not sure which treatment is right for you?

Book a comprehensive eye evaluation. Our specialists will recommend the best course of action for your vision.
